ALouisiana homeowner shot four armed intruders, fatally striking two of the suspects while the surviving two face murder charges for their involvement.
From FOX 8:
Police say four armed intruders entered the home at the end of Palmer Drive at around 10 a.m. and all four wound up being shot by the homeowner leaving two of them are dead.
The St. Tammany Coroner’soffice has identified the deceased as 25-year-old Renard Causey Jr. and 21-year-old Justin Hill, of Hammond. The homeowner’s four-year-old daughter was also apparently struck in the crossfire.
A relative tells us that the homeowner may have been pistol-whipped before he fired at the intruders. Neighbors say they waited 24 hours to learn about the shooting.
Family members say the four-year-old daughter is out of surgery and is expected to make a recovery.
Fox 8 later reported that the two surviving suspects, Renard Causey Sr. and Jason Leblanc, will both be facing charges of first-degree murder in the deaths of their accomplices, as well as armed home invasion charges.
The two suspects were expected to be booked on their charges when they are released from the hospital.
Police say the homeowner is also expected to be ok and is not expected to face any charges, though the incident is still under investigation.
While high profile mass violence incidents such as the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in 2012 or the Las Vegas shooting in 2017 typically come with calls for more restrictions on private firearm ownership in their aftermath, a 2013 CDC study found that defensive use of firearms by crime victims is far more common than offensive firearm use by criminals.
From the CDC:
Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million, in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008.
That could be one reason why support for gun control has steadily declined over recent years, with a recent Gallup poll showing support for harsher restrictions has fallen 7 percent in the last year alone.
Americans have also been purchasing more guns, with gun sales in the first eight months of 2020 outpacing total sales for the entirety of 2019. In total, America has logged over five
