Not even President Joe Biden’s Secretary of Commerce could ignore the success of the former President Donald Trump’s economic policies towards China.
Gina Raimondo, the Biden Administration Commerce Secretary, praised Trump’s tariffs on China, though she said they are in the process of “government review” to “decide what it makes sense to maintain.”
“Let me say,” Raimondo shared. “Those tariffs have been effective. The data show that those tariffs have been effective.”
Confirmed in an 84-15 Senate vote, Raimondo has tried to convince Americans that Biden would be “tough on China.”
Prior to being tapped for Commerce Secretary, Raimondo served as the Democratic Governor of Rhode Island from 2015 to 2021.
“First, we have to be honest which is to say China’s behavior is anti-competitive, coercive—their human rights abuses are horrific. And they need to be held to account for that,” she said.
Despite Raimondo’s statements, Biden has largely been dismissive of China’s threat to American jobs and national security.
In the months leading up to the 2020 Presidential election, Biden shared his dismissive attitude. He said: “They’re not bad folks … They’re not competition for us.”
