Boston officials have declared racism a public health emergency. Mayor Marty Walsh made the announcement on Friday, when he proposed to reallocate funds from the Boston Police Department’s budget to community programs.

He intends on taking 20% of the department’s overtime budget and putting it towards services for the city’s youth, homeless and residents struggling from inequality

According to the mayor, the city of Boston will also help fund these programs.

“The health impacts of historic and systemic racism are clear in our COVID-19 case numbers, and the impacts go far beyond the current crisis,” said Walsh. “So, we’ll be backing this declaration with an initial investment of $3 million.”

He stressed this is the beginning of Boston’s campaign to assist the community and hopes to reform the police department.
