Sen. Rand Paul continued his vocal criticism of Dr. Anthony Fauci Friday night, telling Fox News’s Tucker Carlson that the doctor is “not being honest” with the public.
“What Fauci won’t tell you is he is telling you a ‘noble lie,” Paul, who is a physician himself, told Carlson after the Fox News host played a clip of a tense exchange between the two doctors during a Senate hearing Thursday.
“He is lying because he doesn’t think we are smart enough to make decisions,” Paul added. “His fear is, if we quit wearing masks, the vaccinated [people] will say, ‘What the hell, I’m not wearing a mask either.’”
Paul explained that Fauci’s warning that masks still should be worn because a coronavirus variant could bypass the vaccine is misguided since that hasn’t happened yet.
“There was Dr. Fauci’s opinion, his conjecture that someday there might be a [coronavirus] variant that escapes the control of the vaccine and becomes a pandemic and hospitalizes and kills people,” the Kentucky Republican said. “But there is no evidence it has happened. He thinks it might happen, so you need to wear the mask until he’s sure that things that might happen are not going to happen.”
Paul added that Fauci is “unconcerned about liberty” and is “wearing two masks for theater” while “not being honest with the American public.”
Paul and Fauci have clashed several times over the past year on a variety of coronavirus-related subjects, including face masks, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s handling of the virus, and whether or not children should return to school.
