President Trump on Thursday morning dialed into a private Republican National Committee member breakfast in Jacksonville, Florida, where he was greeted by calls of “We love you!” with nary a mention of Wednesday’s chaotic and violent storming of the U.S. Capitol by his supporters.
He was put on speakerphone by RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and was enthusiastically received, the Washington Examiner has learned.
The president briefly said hello to the assembled members and added that he was sorry to miss the event, where he was originally expected to deliver longer remarks.
“People love the president. This is the president’s party. He will continue to play an oversize role with his influence up and down the ballot,” Florida Republican Party Chairman Joe Gruters told the Washington Examiner.
“There’s a lot of tension right now,” but “give it time and everything will work itself out,” Gruters said of the chaos that erupted Wednesday as lawmakers moved to certify the results of the presidential election.
The news was first reported by the Washington Post. Republicans and party officials who were present told the Post that “members still overwhelmingly support him.”
