Twitter is allowing the Taliban, which has captured the Afghan capital of Kabul and continues to violently seize control of Afghanistan, to regularly post messages to its social media platform, while former U.S. President Donald Trump remains banned.
On Monday, Yahoo! News reported that at least two Taliban spokesmen are currently posting updates of the militant Islamic group’s efforts to establish a new regime in the country:
“Twitter has allowed the Taliban to spread news of their takeover of Afghanistan even as former President Donald Trump is being kept off the platform.
“Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, whose Twitter account has amassed some 287,000 followers, regularly provides updates on the Taliban’s seizure of the country. He uses social media to assert that the overthrow has been largely peaceful despite reports to the contrary.”
“Mujahid is not the sole militant on the site either. Qari Yousef Ahmadi is another Taliban spokesman who regularly tweets updates in Pashto to his 60,000 followers.”
On Tuesday, Reuters reported that the Taliban used Twitter to announce that it will hold a press conference in Afghanistan’s captured capital:
“Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said in a tweet that he will hold a news conference on Tuesday at a media centre in Kabul that was previously used by the Afghan government.”
While Pres. Trump is forbidden from commenting on the matter, or any other, on Twitter, he has issued multiple press releases.
“What took place yesterday in Afghanistan made our withdrawal from Vietnam look like child’s play,” Trump said Tuesday in a statement condemning the Biden Administration’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. “Perhaps in World history, there has never been a withdrawal operation that has been handled so disastrously.”
“It’s not that we left Afghanistan. It’s the grossly incompetent way we left!” Trump declared Monday in a Twitter-length press release.
