Rep. Ted Yoho has resigned from the board of a Christian organization dedicated to ending hunger around the world following his confrontation with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Unsettled by claims that the Florida Republican accosted the Democratic freshman lawmaker, including calling her a “f—ing bitch,” language which Yoho denies using against her, Bread for the World said it met with the congressman on Friday and accepted his resignation.
In a statement, Bread for the World said it sought Yoho’s resignation “as an action that reaffirms our commitment to coming alongside women and people of color, nationally and globally, as they continue to lead us to a more racially inclusive and equitable world.” The organization thanked him for his commitment “to expanding opportunity for men, women, and children around the world,” according to the Associated Press.
Ocasio-Cortez gave an impassioned speech on the House floor on Thursday about the prevalence of sexism in Congress following her confrontation with Yoho on the steps of the U.S. Capitol on Monday.
Yoho spoke on the House floor on Wednesday, apologizing for how the incident has been “misunderstood” by the press, after which Ocasio-Cortez said his remarks did not qualify as an apology because he did not “accept responsibility.”
