Donald Trump has strongly criticised the Duchess of Sussex, describing her as “no good” and taking a dig at cancel culture. The former US president made the comments privately in the aftermath of the Sussexes’ bombshell interview last week.
Trump has previously made outspoken remarks about the divisive Duchess. In September last year, just as the presidential election campaign was reaching top gear, he expressed sympathy for Prince Harry in a damning rebuke of his American wife.
“I’m not a fan of hers,” said Trump of Meghan. With a wry grin he added: “I would say this – and she has probably has heard that – I wish a lot of luck to Harry because he’s going to need it.”
A month earlier, the royal couple had made a blatant appeal to American voters to not elect Trump without directly endorsing rival candidate, Joe Biden. On a video posted online, Meghan described the then president as “divisive” and “misogynistic”.
Harry appealed to US citizens to reject “hate speech, misinformation and online negativity.”
Following the couple’s jaw-dropping interview with Oprah Winfrey last Sunday, Trump decided to keep his thoughts private, telling his close adviser, Jason Miller that speaking publicly would “make a little news”.
Miller appeared on former White House strategist, Steve Bannon’s podcast where he revealed his boss’s reaction to Meghan and Harry’s interview.
“Yeah, [Meghan’s] no good. I said that and now everybody’s seeing it,” Trump told Miller.
But you realise if you say anything negative about Meghan Markle you get cancelled. Look at Piers [Morgan].”
Last week, Piers Morgan was told to leave hit show Good Morning Britain for his anti-Meghan outbursts, voiced in the aftermath of the Oprah interview. Since Morgan’s Tuesday departure, the show’s ratings have plummeted.
Morgan had previously appeared on the celebrity edition of Trump’s tremendously successful version of The Apprentice, using his connection with the property and media tycoon to bag a rare UK interview at the World Economic Forum in 2018.
“I’m on Team Piers. Piers is the best, he’s the greatest,” said Miller of the outspoken former GMB host, now being courted by Andrew Neil’s GB News. “And they went and tried to cancel him simply because he criticised Meghan Markle. This is just the latest chapter of woke culture.”
Over the weekend, it was revealed Meghan is potentially lining up an ambitious political career.
A senior figure from Tony Blair’s administration with strong ties to the US capital told the Mail on Sunday that Meghan had been networking with senior Democrats as she seeks to lay the foundations by “building a campaign and fundraising team” for a presidential bid.
“The Blairite, internationalist and Democratic party networks are buzzing with talk about Meghan’s political ambitions and potential backers,” the source said, who presumed the Duchess had earmarked 2024 as her opportunity to succeed Joe Biden.
